How to make the perfect S’mores
So you’re wondering how to make a s’more or perhaps you don’t even know what a s’more is, well you’ve come to the right place! We’re the experts in everything marshmallow related and we’re here to make sure you don’t go hungry by that bonfire of yours.
What are s’mores? Where did the name s’more come from?
What a peculiar name, s’mores. Nobody actually knows why they are called s’mores, but we do know that they were invented by Girl Scouts in the U.S. Loretta Scott Crew is given credit for the recipe in the book Tramping and Trailing. Our best guess as to why they’re called s’mores is due to abbreviating “some mores”, but nobody really knows why they were called that in the first place! In fact, most of the history surrounding some mores is a mystery!
What is a s’more?
S’mores are a traditional campfire snack that have become popular all over the world. They are essentially a marshmallow + chocolate sandwich, with biscuits on the outside. Most people toast the marshmallow over a fire then use it to melt the chocolate inside the biscuits. We’ll explain it all below
What you’ll need to make s’mores / s’more recipe:
- Marshmallow
- Chocolate
- Biscuits - Graham Crackers or Cookies
- A marshmallow toasting stick
- A fire, cooktop, or even a butane burner
For your convenience we sell s’mores kits that include a handmade marshmallow, handmade graham crackers, and chocolate - all you need to do is start a fire!
We also sell extendable marshmallow toasting sticks so you don’t need to go out and find the perfect stick. It’s also much cleaner and can be reused as many times as you want.
How to make a s’more
- Grab 2 biscuits and a piece of chocolate
- Place the chocolate on one of the biscuits
- Place your marshmallow on your toasting stick, nice and firm - you don’t want it falling off
- Hold your marshmallow near the flame, the closer you get, the hotter and more toasty your marshmallow will get
- When your marshmallow is at the desired level of toastiness, pull it out and place it on your biscuit with chocolate
- Use the other biscuit to pull the marshmallow off the stick and sandwich it between both biscuits
- Ta-da, you have made a s’more!
Different stages of marshmallow toasting
Here at The Marshmallow Co. we live and breathe marshmallows and s’mores. Just like a steak, we believe there’s many different ways to cook a marshmallow and everyone has their own preference:
- Well done
- Medium
- Rare
How do you like your marshmallow?
If you like your mallows super toasty, black, and almost charred on the outside, you’re going to want to leave your marshmallow in the fire for a long time - even let it catch on fire a bit.
If you want your marshmallow gooey but not charred, then you’re going to want to rest your marshmallow just outside
How to make a s’more without a fire
What do you do if you don’t have a campfire or bonfire and still want to make s’mores? Good news is that you can still make these yummy treats! All you need is a cooktop that has a naked flame. Place the marshmallow on a stick or skewer and hover it over the flame of the cooktop - roughly 3-5cm away from the flame. Allow to toast until desired gooeyness and then place between your biscuits.
If you don’t have a cooktop or stove with a flame you can use a tealight candle or your barbecue, however these will take longer to cook so you’ll have to be patient! Alternatively, you could purchase a cooking blowtorch from your local kitchenware shop
How to eat a s’more without making a mess
This is pretty much impossible! To eat a perfectly cooked, gooey s’more you’re going to get marshmallow oozing out the sides of the biscuit and possibly onto your hands. One way to prevent this is to use larger biscuits and always eat over a plate.
At the end of the day, if you’re not making a mess when eating a s’more are you really having fun? :D
